What to choose for wood impregnation from rotting outside and inside

So that the woodwork will serve you as long as possible, they are not afraid of fire, they are non-combustible, you can not do without special impregnations. Such liquids will protect the wood from exposure to UV rays, moisture, pests. In our material we will consider all the options for impregnation for interior and exterior use.

Choose a tool for exterior work

Water-based solutions are good because they do not emit any toxins and penetrate the tree perfectly. Water-repellent impregnations are needed for deep penetration, they have high-quality protective properties, but there is one drawback - they are quite toxic, and therefore they can be used only for outdoor work. Impregnation for wood can be alkyd, oil, acrylic, and the latter option is suitable for work inside the house.

The choice of oil or alkyd depends on the surface and on financial possibilities. For example, for a residential house or bath, made of logs, planed wood, you can use such compositions as "Senezh" or "Biotex". Such brands offer both colorless compositions and solutions with a decorating effect, such as mountain ash, cherry, pine (more than 30 shades).

Since there is an antiseptic in their composition, they not only protect from moisture, but also from rot, they save the tree from insects.

But oil formulations are great for covering outdoor stairs, garden furniture, terraces. On sale you can find products that have a high level of protection against UV rays, such as "Tikkurila."

It is important to note that water-repellent impregnations for external work are necessary when treating surfaces that are regularly affected by moisture: a veranda, a porch, an open terrace. And if a residential house is fully decorated with wooden clapboard, you need to cover the entire area.

1 l of composition is used to cover:

  1. 5 square meters of sawn wood.
  2. About 14 "squares" struganoy.

The approximate time of action of the composition (protection from UV rays and other atmospheric phenomena) is from six months to 6 years, depending on the characteristics of the product.

To extend the period of protective functions and protect the tree from fire, it is necessary to apply a refractory solution from above.

The main thing to remember is that when carrying out outdoor work, water-based solutions should not be used, since they only protect the wood minimally due to the small depth of penetration.

If we talk about wooden surfaces, which are often exposed to hydro-action, you need to choose a special deck impregnation. Her main advantages include the fact that she:

  • maintains temperatures from −40 to +50 degrees;
  • not afraid of ultraviolet radiation;
  • quietly "transfers" precipitation and constant exposure to moisture.

It is best to cover the wood with wood immediately after purchasing the tree. If you transfer these works for later, the material may darken under the influence of the fungus.

It is also worth remembering that wood impregnations are not universal. Additionally, building or finishing material should be coated with stain or varnish, which can form a thin film on the surface.

When processing the walls of the house, you must first remove the old protective coating, pollution. The tree itself must be dry - the level of humidity at 20% and no more. Apply the selected composition with a brush or with a sprayer at least 2 layers. After that, you need to wait until the composition is completely dry - on average, this will take about 4-6 hours, but more detailed information is indicated on the package. Only then can we proceed to further work.

What kind of impregnation suitable for interior work

Choosing a composition for wood impregnation indoors, it is better to focus on the acrylic version. Such fluids are non-toxic and absolutely safe for humans. But in case of application with a sprayer, one cannot do without special protection, since the solution particles will still be in the air. Let's consider the main characteristics of such liquids:

  1. With priming properties. Their duration is small - about a year. They should be applied immediately after the start of work as a protective layer before treating wood with varnish or stain.
  2. Biocidal solutions. They are most often used at an intermediate stage. Such compounds are not protected from UV rays. About 60-70 ml of product are required per square meter. Moreover, between the application of the first and second layer need to endure at least 8 hours.
  3. Water based impregnation with polyurethane. A tree covered with such a tool is more durable, resistant to moisture, and is not afraid of sharp temperature fluctuations. In addition, such compositions can be used to process all types of wood. Waxing compounds can be purchased, as they give the surface a silky texture. Consumption of funds will be higher - about 100 ml per "square".
  4. Lessing impregnation. There are transparent or tinged. If you choose the right impregnation and varnish, you can give the tree a unique look. It is best to choose liquids with thickeners, as they will not leave smudges. If you bought the composition, where there is no mark on the fire resistance of the composition, you will have to additionally treat the surface with a flame retardant agent.

A few words about alkyd and oil-wax impregnation

Alkyd compounds attract the fact that they protect the wood from:

  • moisture;
  • insects;
  • mold;
  • of fire.

The service life of funds in enclosed spaces is about 5 years, with the use of additional coverage, the period increases to 12-15 years. Consumption of alkyd compounds - from 80 to 130 ml per one "square". Drying time - one day, subject to 60% humidity and temperature in the region of +24 degrees.

The composition of this solution contains alkyd resins, which form a film on the surface, as well as special additives that prevent the appearance of mold and rot. After treatment with alkyd compounds, the outer surface of the wood will become glossy.

It is attractive that such compositions do not change their integrity when exposed to temperature, they are not afraid of moisture, at the same time they play the role of a primer and protective impregnation, finishing coating.

In order for such compounds to lay down evenly, you should use a spray gun, the wooden surface itself must be dry. It should be noted that irregularities may appear, however this usually occurs in several cases:

  1. If you do not mix the composition every 3-5 minutes.
  2. When applied to wood with a heterogeneous structure.

But the impregnation in the form of oil-wax will not only protect the surface, but also be able to emphasize their natural beauty. With this solution, you can either emphasize the natural charm of the material, or completely change the color. The main advantage of this composition is that it is completely natural, which makes it 100% suitable for working inside the house.

Another advantage can be called the fact that wood covered with such compositions still "breathes". You do not need to additionally coat the surfaces with varnish or stain (but only in rooms with a low humidity level), as the wax repels water well. You can safely carry out wet cleaning, without fear of damaging the wood.

The main thing is that there should not be harmful resins or paraffin in the oil; therefore, when buying, it is necessary to give preference to well-known brands producing such products.

The benefits of using flaxseed oil

If you have linseed oil at home, you can not buy any impregnation, because it perfectly protects the wood and has high water-repellent properties. In addition, flaxseed oil is completely safe.

The use of this tool as an impregnation has such advantages as:

  • ecological cleanliness;
  • closes even the smallest wood pores;
  • perfectly repels moisture;
  • improves the appearance of the coating.
In the process of applying substances that are part of the oil, begin to thicken under the influence of factors such as light and oxygen, the polymerization process occurs.

Due to this, the liquid linseed oil is converted into a fairly solid mass. Moreover, the more linoleic acid is in the liquid, the higher the protective properties will be; therefore, when buying, pay attention to the composition.

After the work should be given a means to dry, the tree should be under maximum protection. The term of complete drying is about two weeks.

To speed up this process, you need to slightly thicken the oil, for which you need to use tar, turpentine and wax.

When using turpentine, remember that it is a toxic substance, so it can cause allergies. In addition, burns may result in skin contact.

Tar possesses the same properties as turpentine, only it is not so toxic. It is better to use these two structures when carrying out external works. But if you want to thicken flaxseed oil to cover the surfaces inside the house, you'd better stop at the wax: just melt it in a water bath and add to the oil.
