Utrozhestan or Duphaston - which is better to choose and why?

Women's health is largely affected by the proper functioning of hormones. Progesterone is the most important component in the hormonal system of the body. If this hormone is not enough, malfunctions can occur in the reproductive system.

In such cases, gynecologists prescribe hormone preparations containing progesterone, most often Utrogestan or Duphaston.

Utrotestan: properties and instructions

Urozhestan contains progesterone, similar to the natural hormone of the corpus luteum, produced by the ovaries or placenta (during pregnancy). It helps to maintain normal endometrial wall thickness, one of which is attached to the egg in early pregnancy.

Indications

The drug can be used orally or vaginally with progesterone-deficient conditions leading to abnormal functioning of the hormonal system:

  • with abnormal contraction of the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle and related infertility, cycle disorders;
  • during menopause, as well as during menopause and postmenopause (used in conjunction with estrogen);
  • in violation of the work or lack of ovaries;
  • in diseases associated with endometrium;
  • during the preparation for in vitro fertilization (IVF).

In obstetrics, Utrozhestan is assigned to women with a habitual miscarriage in history, with the threat of termination of pregnancy and premature birth.

Instructions for use

The dosage and frequency of use of Utrozestan is determined by the reason for the lack of a hormone. This drug can be taken orally or vaginally.

Inside:

  • with a decrease in the luteal phase, the dosage ranges from 200 to 400 mg per day from the 16th to the 26th day of the cycle;
  • before menopause (in combination with estrogen), 200 mg in a single dose for 12 days;
  • in the period of postmenopausal 100-200 mg per day (in combination with estrogen). The individual dosage must be calculated by a specialist.

Vaginally:

  • with the threat of miscarriage or premature birth, the daily dosage, divided into two doses at regular intervals, is usually 200-400 mg in the first and second trimesters of pregnancy;
  • in the absence of progesterone production due to ovarian dysfunction in combination with estrogens, utrogestan is taken according to the doctor’s prescription according to an individual scheme;
  • IVF is usually given from 200 to 600 mg per day during the first 28 weeks of pregnancy;
  • with functional disorders of the corpus luteum, take 200-300 mg per day from 17 to 27 days of the cycle; in the event of pregnancy, the reception should be continued.
The final decision on the admission of the drug must be made by the doctor, based on the individual needs of the patient.

Side effects

Usually the drug is well tolerated by the body, but in some cases, adverse events may occur:

  • irregularities in the menstrual cycle;
  • swelling of the mammary glands;
  • discharge from the genital tract;
  • heavy sweating;
  • blood pressure surges;
  • drowsiness, tired feeling, dizziness;
  • fever;
  • flatulence, nausea, rarely - vomiting;
  • cholestatic jaundice;
  • urticaria, pruritus, very rarely - anaphylactic shock;
  • local intolerance to the drug after vaginal administration.
Reducing weakness and dizziness will help reduce the dosage, taking the drug at bedtime or switching to vaginal use.

Drug price

The cost of Utrozhestan varies from about 360 to 500 rubles, depending on the region and place of sale of the drug.

Duphaston: properties and instructions

The main component of Duphaston is didgesterone - synthetic progesterone, which is close in its structure and properties to natural. With a lack of progesterone, Duphaston does not affect the suppression of ovulation.

Didrogesteron promotes conception and successful pregnancy. During menopause, it improves the effect of estrogen, while it does not increase blood clotting and does not destroy the liver, it is easily tolerated by the body.

Indications for use

Progesterone deficiency and related diseases (inflammation of the endometrium, premenstrual syndrome, painful menstruation, infertility, the threat of miscarriage, various cycle disorders, menopause and menopause).

Duphaston can be prescribed by a doctor when planning a pregnancy to create the desired hormonal background in the first trimester of gestation.

Instructions for use

Duphaston is taken orally one or more times a day (depending on the dosage and prescription of the specialist) at the same time.

  1. With a non-constant cycle, 10 mg twice a day from the 11th to the 25th day of the cycle.
  2. For endometrial diseases and dysmina - 10 mg 2-3 times a day from 5 to 25 day of the cycle.
  3. With infertility, 10 mg per day from day 14 to day 25 of the cycle; If pregnancy occurs, treatment should be continued in the hospital under the threat of interruption scheme.
  4. With the threat of miscarriage - 40 mg at a time, then you should take 10 mg every 8 hours until the diagnosis is canceled, then the dosage should be gradually reduced.
  5. With habitual miscarriage, abnormal bleeding from the genital tract, as well as in combination with estrogen during menopause and postmenopausal, the specialist should appoint the dosage of the drug on the basis of individual characteristics and examination results.

Cancellation of Duphaston during pregnancy is carried out gradually (reduce the dosage by 10 mg every three to four days). Otherwise there is a risk of bleeding.

Side effects

Taking Duphaston as a hormonal drug can sometimes be associated with the development of undesirable effects:

  • anemia;
  • headache;
  • minor abnormalities of the liver;
  • malaise;
  • rarely, bleeding;
  • pruritus and other allergic reactions.

Side effects when taking Duphaston are extremely rare, but if they are detected, you should immediately consult with your doctor.

Drug price

The cost of the drug Duphaston varies from about 450 to 600 rubles, depending on where this medicine is sold.

Comparative characteristics of contraindications drugs Duphaston and Utrozhestan

Like any hormonal drugs, Utrogestan and Duphaston have a number of contraindications that can be presented in the form of a table:

UtrozhestanDuphaston
1. Hypersensitivity to the drug.

2. Problems with blood clotting.

3. Vaginal bleeding of unknown origin.

4. Incomplete miscarriage.

5. Malignant tumors.

6. Liver disease (by ingestion).

7. With care: diseases of the cardiovascular system; pressure increase

diabetes mellitus, epilepsy.

1. Hypersensitivity to the drug.

2. With care - skin allergic reactions during the previous pregnancy.

Obviously, Duphaston has fewer contraindications. This is due to the fact that didrogesterone is more easily absorbed by the female body than natural progesterone, which, on the one hand, improves the functioning of the hormonal system, on the other hand, can worsen the functioning of the gastrointestinal tract and the liver.

Utrozhestan or Duphaston when planning pregnancy - which is better?

Utrozhestan is a complete analogue of female progesterone. It promotes the development of natural progesterone in women. However, one should know that the drug Utrozhestan has a thickening effect on the circulatory system.

Duphaston is a synthetic analogue of progesterone. It completely or partially replaces the lack of a natural female hormone. In any case, planning a pregnancy is a serious step, therefore only a doctor, after a complete examination of the patient, can make the final choice in favor of one or another drug.

Utrozhestan or Duphaston - what is better during pregnancy and the threat of miscarriage?

Both drugs have proven themselves in obstetric practice. Duphaston is more studied, has fewer side effects, when ingested does not adversely affect the gastrointestinal tract.

Utrogestan has more undesirable effects, it later began to be applied in clinical practice, however its natural composition and the possibility of vaginal administration often force one to make a choice in favor of this drug.

During pregnancy, urozhestan reduces stress muscles of the uterus, thereby relieves its tone, which can cause threatening abortion.

It should be understood that this or that drug may not suit every pregnant woman. Therefore, when carrying a fetus and, especially, the threat of miscarriage, it is not recommended to take Duphaston or Utrogestan without consulting a doctor.

Thus, both Duphaston and Utrozhestan are really good preparations, with the help of which you can defeat various women's ailments.

  1. Both medications contain progesterone, which is necessary for the normal functioning of the female reproductive system (including successful gestation).
  2. Utrogestan is made from plant materials, contains natural progesterone, and Duphaston is a synthetic drug, but due to this property Duphaston is better absorbed by the body, and therefore, acts faster. Therefore, in situations that do not tolerate delay, doctors prefer Duphaston. If a long course of treatment is required, Utrozhestan is often prescribed, since it consists of a larger number of natural components.

Women reviews

I want to share my experience with Duphaston. A year ago, I got pregnant. Before that there were 2 pregnancies with a bad outcome. She carried her daughter only thanks to the attending physician, who appointed Duphaston to me from the 6th week of pregnancy. This drug helped me with the threat in the first trimester, did not cause any side effects (I'm allergic!) Just keep in mind that you need to take it at the same time, and reduce the dosage gradually!

Inga, 29 years old, Nizhny Novgorod

I am 35 years old, and I could not get pregnant for a long time. After the examination, it turned out that I had an insufficient luteal phase of the cycle. The doctor prescribed Utrozhestan, and - voila! After three months of treatment, I finally told my husband the good news that we would have a little one. Pregnancy was not easy, in the first trimester, too, took Utrozhestan. Only after the 14th week the doctor allowed to start reducing the dosage.

Olga, 35 years old, Moscow

I carried out the child at Duphaston, I took it on the prescription of the doctor until almost 20 weeks. In the first trimester there were constant threats, lay on conservation, Duphaston helped a lot.
