The average life expectancy of the population of Russia

Every citizen who monitors the socio-political situation in the country, at least once faced with the concept of "average life expectancy." Leading domestic media are full of headlines like "Life expectancy has decreased by X months" or "The average Russian began to live longer by N%."

Very often, the data are very contradictory or even frankly speculative. What is this indicator and how adequately does it reflect the demographic situation? We will talk about this in today's article.

The essence of the term and calculation methodology

Average or life expectancy is an integral demographic indicator showing how long an average number of people born in one year will live, with a constant mortality rate in each age group. The method of calculation is based on the use of mortality tables - systems of numbers characterizing the order of extinction of human generations.

Every year, the Federal Statistics Service collects information on mortality, after which it distributes the dead according to gender, age, and place of residence. The next step is to divide the number of person-years of later life for surviving to the age of N by the number of surviving to the age of N.

If N = 0, then we will call the resulting figure "life expectancy at birth" or OPZHPR. It OPZHPR most accurately displays information on mortality of the population, because, in contrast to the mortality rate, it is not dependent on the age structure of the population.

Also, in most cases, when talking about the average life expectancy, mean OPZHPR.

As can be seen from the table, OPZHPR in the Russian Federation for 2015 amounted to 71.39 years, which is a record since 1991. In support of this thesis, in order not to overload the reader with a huge array of data, we have compiled a graph reflecting the dynamics of the average life expectancy in Russia since 1991:

Also, women traditionally live longer, which can be judged based on the following diagram:

Perspectives

Average life expectancy is the most important indicator in demographic and sociological statistics. Its value is directly proportional to mortality, government spending on health care, education, social protection of vulnerable groups of the population, the level of the criminal situation in the country.

Today we can say with confidence that the situation with the ratio of the birth rate to mortality in Russia has returned to normal.

Rosstat claims that in 2015 the number of newborns for the first time exceeded the number of deaths, and this trend remains steady. This trend is immediately displayed on the statistics, as you could see above.

In 2007, the government approved the “Concept of the demographic policy of the Russian Federation for the period up to 2025”. One of the points of the program was an increase in the average life of up to 70 years. As you can see, the result exceeded expectations.

Further growth of OPCHR depends on the stability of the socio-political situation, the growth of the population’s well-being, the improvement of the environment and the absence of major armed conflicts in the long term.

And a few more figures about life expectancy - in the next video.
