What is a receiver and how to connect it to the TV

There are many modern TV models that support the new digital broadcasting format. However, it should be borne in mind that for models that were purchased 2-3 years ago, the signal of this standard is not available.

Therefore, in order to enjoy the digital quality of broadcasting on older TV models, you must additionally purchase a special set-top box called a receiver. Such a device can improve the quality of sound, image and television in general.

Digital receiver - what is it?

This console is a small device, the direct purpose of which is to fix and then transmit a digital signal to the TV. This standard is denoted by the abbreviation "DVB-T2".

Simply put, a digital television receiver is capable of transforming an analog signal from a conventional decimeter antenna into digital quality. In addition, this device has many other additional functions, the number of which may vary depending on the cost of the console and the manufacturer.

The most common (budget) version of the tuner can only convert a signal from one standard to another, but a more expensive model allows you to control the received signal.

Digital tuner can be installed in almost any area where analog television catches.

At the same time, it allows you to view a larger number of channels with high-quality sound and image.

To install such a device, you do not need to hire a specialist and pay him money, since it is enough to perform several simple steps.

It is necessary to turn on the receiver in the power grid, connect the available cables to it and the TV, perform the setup, and in a few minutes you can enjoy watching your favorite channels.

TV set-top box functionality

Regardless of the price and manufacturer, all models of consoles are capable of receiving a digital terrestrial signal, which adds several channels and also affects the quality of their broadcasting. But at the same time, each model of the device has its own additional features. For example, the most expensive TV receiver from a well-known brand may have the following list of additional functions:

  • compress video to "MPEG-4" format;
  • have a card reader that allows you to use special cards for watching pay TV channels;
  • support the digital standard "DBV-S2" (satellite signal), that is, a tuner having such a parameter can receive a signal from both a decimeter antenna and a satellite one;
  • have an HDMI connector, which, if you have the same cable, helps to improve the quality of broadcast TV channels
  • availability of LAN-input that allows you to connect the device to the Internet;
  • the ability to support the "split screen", through which at the same time you can watch two or more channels on one TV screen;
  • the ability to connect a portable hard disk on which it will be possible to record and store interesting TV programs;
  • the presence of two or more USB-connectors, allowing to display information from a flash drive on the TV screen;
  • the ability to record three channels in HDTV quality in real time;
  • availability of a full Internet browser.

TV tuner models and their connection

To date, in any store that specializes in the sale of audio and video equipment, you can find a wide range of digital tuners. However, the following low-cost models are considered the most popular and widely used by the population:

  1. "Telefunken TF DVBT201". The easiest option budget receiver. Of the additional functions has only a USB-connector, with which you can use the flash drive as a media player. Among the shortcomings can be identified the lack of additional functionality and strong heating of the case.
  2. "Tesler DSR720". Characterized by an exclusive design. In addition, the manufacturer produces such prefixes in two colors (white and black). This model is capable of playing media files. There is one, but a significant drawback, which is the inability to watch TV programs in the "MKV" format or rather, you can watch them, but without sound. This is explained by the fact that in these receivers there is no NSS codec.
  3. "BBK SMP136HDT2". This model is manufactured by a Chinese manufacturer. It has a built-in media player and USB, but does not play broadcasting. This receiver is the cheapest.

Almost all receiver models have an identical connection, but the more expensive the receiver, and it has more additional functions, the more difficult it will be to connect.

To connect a conventional receiver, you must perform the following procedure:

  1. Connect the antenna wire to the receiver, on the back there is a corresponding connector. In this case, it is assumed that the cable is in working condition, that is, it is already connected to the antenna.
  2. Since the TV tuner is powered by electricity, it must be connected to an electrical network with a voltage of 220 volts. To do this, you need to plug the power cord into the outlet. At the same time, experts do not recommend to turn on the TV and receiver in one socket with the help of a tee, since in case of a voltage drop two devices can burn out at once, therefore it is best to use two different sockets that are located close to each other.
  3. Next you need to connect the receiver directly to the TV itself. To do this, usually comes with a set of two cords. One type of connecting wire is designed for more modern TVs and has plugs that fit more closely to the connector. That, in turn, has a direct impact on the quality of TV broadcasting. The second wire is for older TVs. The connection of such a cord with a TV is made using a SCART connector, from which a plug often drops out. Therefore, if the TV has two connectors, it is best to choose the first, more modern. There is also another connection method that involves the use of an HDMI cable. To date, this option is the most popular, since such a connection ensures excellent sound and image quality.
  4. If an old-fashioned TV is used for watching TV, then it is possible to connect a tuner of the "tulip" type. To do this, use the three wires of a special wire with three multi-colored tips that correspond to the colors of the connectors on the TV. In this case, each wire color is responsible for its functions. The wire with the yellow tip transmits the image, with the red one is the audio output, with the white one it is responsible for the sound transmission. If for some reason the colors of the plugs do not match the colors of the connectors, then the connection can be made by elimination, that is, rearrange the plugs until a clear picture and good sound appear.

When you connect a digital receiver, you need to know that the brightness and clarity of the image directly depend on the cable length. Therefore, the shorter the cable length, the better the transmitted picture on the TV screen.

Connecting one set-top box to two TVs is done sequentially. In this case, two connection jacks should be involved, which are referred to as high-frequency modulators. However, in this case, it should be borne in mind that channel switching can be performed only on one TV (near which the tuner is located), and the second TV will only show the channel that is on the first one.

Connecting a digital receiver Tricolor

The Tricolor tuner is practically no different from other receivers. And so its connection methods are similar. That is, depending on the TV model, the Tricolor transmitter connection can be made using:

  • Scart connector;
  • HDMI wires;
  • component output Y Pb Pr;
  • "tulip";
  • S-Video format.

In addition, for each method of connection must be a special cable with the right plugs or connectors.
