Suspension "Pirantel": instructions for use, features, analogues

There are frequent situations when a child pulls something in his mouth, especially in the first year of life. And the consequences of such behavior sometimes become diseases of the digestive tract, namely, helminth infection.

In adults, this is less common, but is also not completely ruled out. Therefore, you need to know how to help yourself and loved ones. With regard to worms, Pirantel is considered an effective drug.

Release form, composition and pharmacological action

It is made in the form of a suspension and tablets. The main active ingredient is pyrantel. Dosage - 250 mg per dose. Depending on the form of release contains:

• tablets - 3 or 6 pieces per pack, 3 each in a blister;
• suspension - 10 or 15 ml with dosage of 250 and 50 mg.

As additional ingredients contains:

• sodium benzoate;
• carmellose sodium;
• sorbitol;
• glycerol;
• sodium aluminosilicate;
• polysorbate;
• Povidone;
• citric acid monohydrate;
• simethicone;
• water;
• flavoring.

Has anthelmintic effect on a number of species of parasites, acts on the nervous system. It is effective against mature and immature individuals and does not exert an adequate effect when used on migratory larvae.

Indications and contraindications

Used when:

• ascariasis;
• hookworm;
• necatoria;
• enterobiasis.

Contraindications include only intolerance to the components. It is not recommended to use during pregnancy, so there were no clinical experiments confirming the absence of influence on the fetus.

"Pyrantel" suspension: instructions for use for children and adults

The maximum dosage is prescribed in accordance with age and body weight:

• children from 6 to 24 months - 125 mg (2.5 ml);
• 2-6 years old - 250 mg (5 ml);
• 6-12 years old - 500 mg (10 ml);
• after 12 years, the weight is less than 75 kg - 750 mg (15 ml);
• All adults and children over 12 years old, weighing more than 75 kg - 1000 mg (20 ml).

The scheme of application depends on the patient’s disease:

1. When infected with ascariasis and enterobiasis, the drug is used once. The dose is calculated as 10 mg per kilogram of body weight. Sometimes doctors prescribe 5 mg per kilogram;
2. With this disease, as ankilostomidoz, the medicine will be applied for 3 days. The daily dose is calculated as 10 mg per kilogram of body weight;
3. If the diagnosis is "necatoria", the doctor will prescribe 20 mg per day for each kilogram of body weight, the course will be 2 days.

The drug is taken during a meal or after a meal.

Side effects, overdose

The negative effects of the drug include:

• nausea;
• vomiting;
• diarrhea;
• pain in the stomach;
• increased activity of liver enzymes - transaminases - in rare cases;
• headache;
• dizziness;
• drowsiness and feeling tired;
• insomnia;
• hearing loss - infrequently;
• hallucinations - infrequently;
• confusion - infrequently;
• numbness of the limbs - infrequently;
• skin rashes;
• elevated body temperature.

It is worth noting that these side effects are observed in a small number of cases.

There is no data on overdose. It is not recommended to exceed the dose prescribed by the doctor in order to avoid negative reactions of the body to the medicine. For the same purpose, it is necessary to keep the bottle away from children.

1. No concomitant use with mild drugs is required;
2. In the presence of hepatic diseases, the drug should be prescribed with caution;
3. During the treatment of myasthenia, "Pirantel" is contraindicated;
4. To achieve the effect in case of enterobiasis, it is necessary to take the drug at once to all people living together;
5. At the end of the treatment course, you need to make sure of recovery, having passed the analysis on helminths;
6. During pregnancy, prescribed with caution to avoid negative effects on the fetus;
7. To children younger than 24 months to prescribe the drug with caution, constantly monitor the patient;
8. It is not recommended to drive vehicles and perform other actions that require a high reaction rate when taking the medicine due to possible side effects.

Price and analogues of the drug

Depending on the volume of the bottle and the region, the cost of the drug ranges from 35 to 65 rubles per pack. This is a definite plus for a medicine that can be urgently needed.

More expensive analogue of the French production ("Pirantel" produced in Poland) can be considered "Helmintox", the price of which is within 140 rubles for 15 ml.
