The drug Jodomarin: instructions for use for children and adults

Iodine deficiency is a very common condition in our country. Since the main source of this trace element in food is sea fish and seafood, the risk zone includes all regions where there is no tradition to eat them in the required amount, and most of them.

To compensate for the lack of iodine in food and water, the drug Iodomarin and its analogues are used.

Release form, composition, pharmacological action

Iodine is necessary for the body to synthesize thyroid hormones. These biologically active substances regulate many processes in the body. Their deficiency - hypothyroidism - leads to a deterioration in the general condition and well-being of the patient.

The patient becomes sluggish, his body temperature drops, psychomotor reactions slow down, immunity decreases. Characteristic external changes are formed - a puffy face, a goiter on the neck, a quiet voice, mimic poverty, a constant feeling of fatigue.

The use of a sufficient amount of iodine is an indispensable condition for the treatment and prevention of iodine deficiency.

The action of iodomarin and similar drugs is based on this - they compensate for the lack of an important trace element in the body.

The active ingredient of Iodomarin is potassium iodide, the main supplier of iodine ions. The drug is available in tablets containing 200 mg / day (daily rate) and 100 μg of the active substance (for children). The release form is a pill that is at risk according to which they can be divided if it is necessary to take half the dose.

Indications and contraindications

Yodomarin is used in the following cases:

  • in healthy people - for the prevention of iodine deficiency;
  • in the complex therapy of hypothyroidism;
  • for the prevention of damage to the thyroid gland in areas of high radiation hazard.

In the first two states, iodomarin helps to ensure the normal level of iodine in the blood, which is necessary for the functioning of the thyroid gland. In the latter case, the effectiveness of iodomarin is based on the fact that the thyroid gland is able to assimilate only a certain amount of iodine during the day, and timely taking the drug will make it immune to radioactive isotopes of iodine.

Iodomarin is not prescribed for hyperthyroidism - excessive thyroid function, hypersensitivity to iodine (iodism), and senile dermatitis. The drug is not used for suspected malignant tumors of the thyroid gland, as well as in the treatment of this disease.

If a patient is prescribed radioactive iodine (hyperthyroidism therapy), then you should not take iodomarin. The dosage is limited in the presence of a benign tumor of the thyroid gland.

Instructions for use for adults and children

The drug is prescribed by a doctor, but it can be bought at a pharmacy without a prescription. You can take it, regardless of the meal, usually once a day. The dosage and duration of the course of treatment is determined by the doctor.

For the prevention of endemic goiter (pathology caused by iodine deficiency), adults are prescribed 1 tablet of Iodomarin 100 or Iodomarin 200 (depending on the iodine intake) 1 time per day.

Children under 12 years old - half or a whole tablet of Iodomarin 100 once a day. Can be taken from birth. Pregnant and lactating women are prescribed a whole tablet of Iodomarin 200 each day. The drug is used continuously.

For the treatment of iodine deficiency goiter, up to 200 µg iodine per day is prescribed to children and 300-500 µg to adults. The course of treatment lasts until the patient's condition is normalized, then the drug is prescribed in prophylactic doses.

If there is a threat of radioactive contamination, iodomarin is prescribed in a dose of 500-600 μg for adults and 200-300 μg for children. Duration of admission - until the end of the danger. Reception of Iodomarin prevents the accumulation of radioactive iodine ion in the thyroid gland, but does not prevent the radiation damage of other organs.

Features of use during pregnancy and lactation

During pregnancy, the need for iodine increases, since the mother's body supplies these microelements not only to the thyroid gland itself, but also to the baby’s forming organ.

Yodomarin is allowed for future mothers and lactating women, moreover, it is absolutely necessary. It is prescribed in a dose of 200-300 mcg (1-1.5 tablets of Iodomarin 200 or 2-3 tablets of Iodomarin 100).

If the patient continues to experience iodine deficiency, the dose may be increased.

It is inconvenient to give the drug to newborns because of the dosage form, but it is possible if it was prescribed by a doctor. Dosage for children - 50 mg (half tablets Iodomarin 100).

The tablet is crushed into powder, added to water or milk. Most often, this method is used if the mother does not have the opportunity to breastfeed the baby and does not receive the required dose of iodine with the mother's milk.

Side effects, overdose

Yodomarin rarely causes side effects with proper use, including in children and adolescents. But with individual intolerance of iodine, manifestations of iodism are possible - nasal congestion, tearing, and hoarseness.

The appearance of these symptoms is a sign that it is necessary to reduce the dose of the drug or to cancel it. In this case, be sure to consult with the endocrinologist.

Perhaps the appearance of acne, bad breath, various dermatitis, rashes, urticaria. On the part of the digestive system possible diarrhea, or, conversely, constipation, staining of the oral mucosa in brownish color, burning sensation in the throat. In severe cases - seizures, loss of consciousness.

Symptoms of an overdose of iodomarin - vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain. The mucous membranes at the same time have a characteristic brown-yellow shade. The skin does not stain (in contrast to the icteric syndrome). In severe cases, vomiting and diarrhea lead to dehydration and shock.

It is not necessary to fight vomiting and diarrhea, but it is imperative that the patient provide plenty of drink. It is advisable to use mineral water or the drug Regidron, which restores electrolytes, and not just fluid loss. You can take intestinal sorbents (activated carbon). If it is impossible to cope with dehydration at home, it is necessary to take the patient to the hospital.

Special instructions, drug interactions

The drug should not be combined with drugs that are prescribed for hyperthyroidism (thyrostatitis, thyrotoxic drugs). In this case, the effectiveness of therapy decreases. In contrast, iodomarin is able to reduce the thyrotoxic side effect of some drugs.

Another dangerous combination is iodomarin and potassium-sparing diuretics. In this case, the body accumulates potassium ions, the excess of which adversely affects the work of the heart and muscles.

Drug price

The drug is sold in pharmacies without a prescription in packs of 100 tablets. Yodomarin 100 can be bought for 145 p, Yodomarin 200 - for 215 p. The price is quite low, but many patients find it excessive and are looking for cheaper counterparts.

The cheapest among them is potassium iodide. It contains the same active ingredient in a dosage of 200 micrograms, only produced by domestic pharmaceutical plants.

The cost of a pack of 100 tablets - 140 p. The drug is not available in the dosage of 100 mg, so it may be inconvenient in pediatric practice.

Reviews

In our city, iodine deficiency is normal, it is not enough in food, seafood is expensive. I have to use iodized salt and take iodomarin. I drink it every day on a tablet (200mkg), I feel good. The doctor says it is quite difficult to get an overdose.

During pregnancy, the doctor recommended that I drink iodomarin along with other vitamins. This is so that the baby does not have iodine deficiency before birth. Took as it should be, the baby was born healthy. The pediatrician says that you need to continue to receive the baby is useful.

Ekaterina, 25 years old, Novosibirsk

I was prescribed Jodomarin for goiter. He took two pills for a whole month. It was a serious condition, it was about the operation. The operation still had to be done, but seemingly in a smaller volume. Now I drink in prophylactic doses, the doctor says that it is for good. But the state of health is much better.
